J Lambert Gibson young Salt Lake attorney set his goal at becoming a professor of mathe mathe- matics He was sailing right along toward accomplishment of his ambition ambition ambition am am- in 1930 when he received his masters master's degree at the University University University sity of Utah To make things nicer Mr Gibson won a Rhodes scholarship scholarship scholarship scholar scholar- ship and left for two years of study at Oxford university in Eng Eng- land But there the straight path lo to ton a professorship stopped slopped Mr Gibson returned from England to lo find the United States still in the grip of economic stress You couldn't get a job teaching school in those thoe times he said Monday leaning back in his chair and laughing as he recalled his earlier difficulties It was not a laughing matter in 1933 however and Mr Gibson went back to to school for another year in hope the storm would blow over He decided to lo broaden his education by studying law the theone theone theone one year That ended his ambition to become become become be be- come a professor Law appealed so sowell sowell sowell well he decided to practice it and andin andin andin in 1936 he received his degree Today Today Today To To- day he is glad that he made the change for he enjoys legal work worl particularly that dealing with taxation taxation tax tax- alion matters Mr Gibson feels the depression changed his outlook on life a life a change for the good I had the idea anyone anyone who didn't make a million dollars was wasa a failure but Ive I've certainly changed my mind on that I have learned to have a lot of sympathy for the person who is down and out and meeting reverses he said Mr Gibson was secretary of the state stale senate In 1937 and 1939 He was chairman of the legislative committee of the junior bar section and a member of the legislative committee of the Utah State Bar He has been active in the affairs of the Democratic party He lie married Miss Bernice Ellsworth Ellsworth Ellsworth Ells Ells- worth worth and they live at t T street |
