| Show a. a tf J TABBY A AND ND NED Tabby was the house cat and Ned the dog and they were very ery goo good friends up to the time I am going to tell you about One day the house was very still sUIt Cook had gone to her room for a nap and Tabby was asleep In t frol of the kitchen stove Ned had been asleep behind the stove and a fly had buzzed about his bis head and finally lighted on his nose In the most aggravating manner and Ned sprang up to catch it Away flew the fly and Ned after r it right into the pantry and lighted on the edge of the lowest shelf shelt Ned lifted his head to snap at the fly and that was when and where all the trouble started Ned smelled something that pleased him and he sniffed again It was the pie that stood near the edge of the shelf Smells like meat I shouldn't wonder wonder wonder won won- der a bit if it were a nice Juicy meat pie and maybe there is a bone in it too said Ned He stood looking at the pie for a minute and then he looked out in the kitchen at the sleeping Tabby Ned trotted out to her and gave her hera a poke with his nose Come Como in the pantry he said softly I want to ask asle you Jou something Tabby followed her ears sticking up and her eyes wide open What Is it asked Ned What is what asked Tabby looking looking looking look look- ing up and stretching her neck toward the shelf shelt That pie said Ned I think It Isa is isa isa a chicken pie what do you think It Itis itis is r Chicken repeated Tabby licking her mouth and swinging her tail tall Ill take a sniff and see Tabby put her front paws on the shelf shelt and stood on her hind legs tiptoes tiptoes tiptoes tip tip- toes and gave a long hard sniff It might be meat she said I cant can't be quite sure it is chicken without without without with with- out looking Inside It might be fish said Ned You like fish dont don't you Tabby But whether It is a fish pie or a chicken pie it does not Interest me I dont don't care for either but I knew you did and so I told you I would like to know knowl Just for the sake of knowing If I was right I guess chicken and if it it is meat I lose and you win the guess Ill I'll soon find out said Tabby springing up on the shelf shelt beside the pie She poked her nose In to the openIng opening opening open open- ing where the pie had b been en cut and then someone came In the kitchen and Ned ran out and crawled behind the stove and pretended to be asleep With the opening of the door puss pulled her head hend out of the pie and Jumped and over went the dish pie and all on the floor with a crash that brought cook to the pantry door In a hurry Puss dodged the broom cook swung at her as she ran for the outside door You bad cat you have spoiled the thenice thenice thenice nice meat pt p pl i It Is only fit for Ned to eat now now Cook gathered up the broken broleen pie and put It in Neds Ned's dish outside the thedoor thedoor door and while he was eating it Puss crept alongside of the house toward himI himI him I believe you did that on purpose to get me to tip It over said Puss You knew all the time it was meat and now I shall shaH have to go without my supper while you feast on meat pie You are a mean trickster that is what you are Mr Ned Anyway you won the guess said Ned looking out of the corner of his eye at Tabby You said It might be meat and nd It was so I lost you see I 1 dont don't see it at all said Tabby I shall lose my supper and maybe my breakfast unless cook forgets about the pie by morning and as for you you are no longer a friend of mine said Tabby as she walk walked d away swinging her tail taU In an angry fash fash- ion Some folks are never satisfied said Ned She won the guess and she wanted the pie too I think she Is ver very unreasonable Copyright I 1916 by the McClure Newspaper Syndicate ate New NewYork NewYork NewYork York City |
