Show WOULD SAt T LAES' LAES BUY LLy ELEPHANTS FOR U LIBERTY PARK Circus Is Ready to Sell Princess Alice Mother of f the Only Living Baby Elephant Born in Captivity Purchase e Would Mean Advertising for City and Fun for the Kiddies Money Is Needed What Will the People Do How would the kiddies of Salt Lake like to have a big Mamma Elephant to play with at Liberty park Maybe they can have one for a pet if they persuade their fathers and mothers to help them raise a fund to assist the city in buying it it Princess Alice mother of the tile only baby elephant ever born in the United States that hat has lived can be purchased A reporter for THE TELEGRAM about ten days ago conceived the idea that perhaps an elephant could be added to the rapidly growing and very interesting zoo at Liberty park if the city commissioners and individual citizens could operate co-operate in in the purchase of f such an animal He broached this idea to the members of the city commissio commission commis- commis sio sion and his suggestion met Islet with a ready response His first idea was was was' to have the city forfeit the payment of a circus license as part of the purchase price for the elephant The editor of THE TELEGRAM telegraphed the managing nain editor of the Denver Post W. W E. E Shepherd asking what arrangements arrangements could be made with with the Sells-Floto Sells circus owned by the Denver Post proprietors an and last night THE TELEGRAM editor received a letter from H. H H. H one of the owners of the Denver Post and the Sells-Floto Sells circus in which he offered to sell to this city Princess Alice mother of Little Miracle her third calf born in the United States which will come to Salt Lake soon with her Both of her calves died because lse the keepers did not know how to raise them in their infant days No other baby elephants have been born in captivity Little Miracle born April 15 is alive and healthy however although it has been carried all over the United States If the city could forfeit a Soo circus license as part payment for Princess Alice it would be necessary to raise something less than cash to give the Salt Lake zoo this elephant which is the only breeder in captivity Can you imagine what a great thing it would be for the zoo should another baby elephant be born here and live THE TELEGRAM would like to hear from the kiddies as to toy whether whether-or y th r or not they hey think t. t this is fund could be r raised to give them this great addition t to the zoo We would also like to hear from grown rown persons to see whether or not this plan would be feasible This is written today to find out the public sentiment on this ques ques- tion If Salt Lake wants to give the children this great treat THE TELEGRAM will aid in in n every way possible not only by giving publicity publicity publicity pub pub- to the plan such as it did for the baseball and ice fund but butwill butwill butwill will also make a liberal contribution toward the fund We V believe that nothing else could possibly be done that would make little childish hearts happier than to give them a big gentle elephant to play with at the park There should be one or two contributions of 1000 and each however to insure the raising of this fund and we would lik like to know from some of the wealthy people who are interested in children whether or not they would be willing to make such contributions to this fund If they will let THE TELEGRAM know we can quickly tell whether or not this plan will work out or whether it will have to be aban aban- Action should be taken soon because w we would like to let Mr have an answer as soon as possible Following is a copy of the letter written by Mr to the editor of THE TELEGRAM August 10 1916 Mr E. A Editor The Telegram Salt Lake City Utah My Dear Mr Vand venter Your telegram to Shepherd reference elephant for S Salt Lake City I read this morning Seriously replying to it we haven't an elephant that we want to sell and besides elephants that is when they arc are good elephants are hard to obtain at any time and particularly now on account of the war We have one elephant that we would sell to Salt Lake City viz Princess Alice mother of Little Miracle This elephant has had three babies Two of them died because we did not know how to feed them Little Miracle born April 15 is now alive in spite of the fact that since it was one week old it has traveled all over the United States gone through the hot period and we believe is going to live I am saying this for a two-fold two reason Princess Alice will have another baby if everything goes well in the course of fifteen months moths She is is a working elephant and is is tr trained to perform trained to push wagons and pull wagons let people ride rido on her back and in other ways ought to be an acceptable zoo elephant She used to and does doeG now noYl at intervals perform with the big troupe The big troupe consisted of six elephants but they have gotten so big that only five can get into a circus circus circus cir cir- cir cir- cus ring therefore I have an extra elephant and if the proposition ap appeals appeals appeals ap- ap peals to Salt Lake City we may sell Princess Alice An An elephant such as she is is and the only breeding elephant in America that America that part I am certain of and of-and and now in calf i is worth but butI I I.
