Opposite r. r Ef 1 z r tw t Statement Issued by the Board of w Education of Salt Sail Lake City I Respecting the Proposed School I Bond B nd Issue 1 r 1 I The school a census ns s taken Hi fit July 1915 shows that in the Salt L Lake M II City School Scho Di District tri t there ther are school children between the ages of of six and eighteen years The school population has increased one on thousand thousand in number numbe number for f for r each year of the last five years The number of school buildings in Salt Lake City is not adequate to house all of the children of school age in the city In a number pf a aiso buildings the congestion n is is Ia o great as to seriously interfere wit with efficient nt work in others the principals and teachers are forced to seat seat children in halls and in basement basement rooms lighted by artificial artificial light and andilly andilly andilly illy ac adapted apted to study tudy purposes purposes s. s Last ye year r because of the lack of roo room room in which to accommodate al all the children and because it had no fun funds fund s a sI with which to build more moree buildings the Board of Education was co corn I pel led to and did pur purchase and is now using using sixteen portable frame scho school I houses While these portable buildings helped to relieve the congestio I for the time being each one could take care of only a com corn small number and uld for obvious reasons they are at best onya only ony a makeshift I The fund fund from deri derived d from taxes taxes each year ye r for building purposes is is not notI I enough to enable the b board ard to keep pace in the building g of school buil b ings with the rapid growth of the city's population In other words te t e school population is at t the present time growing f faster ster than the ta tax fund for school buildings is gr growing wing The only alternative which th the board has therefore is submit to-submit to the qualified electors of Salt Lalio Lako City the question as' as s' s to whether or not the electors desire to have th the Salt Lake Cit City School District issue bonds for or th the purpose of raising the funds with w which ich to build the required ired buildings It is not now a question whether wl-Jether this method or some other method is the more desirable one for raising the necessary money the only question in effect is asto as asto asto to whether or not the qualified voters voters' desire to have the necessary additional buildings buil built There Ther is only one method now open in which to accomplish that result as as the th law now no stands and as the building fud fu fu d from tax sources sources' n now stands stands and and that is by a bond issue T The proposed bond issue wl which is is well within the bonded limit of Salt Lake L ke City School District as fixed by law th t limit lima based upon the assessed valuation tion of property in the school district dis des being approximately ely over and above that which is now I outstanding j If f the the bond issue is is voted favorably the Board of Education will purchase one school sit site West west of Liberty Park upon upon which it now has hasan hasan hasy an option and will erect a schoolhouse thereon it will also purchase another site and build another schoolhouse in some one or or- another another section of the city where the need is the most 1 pressing and where the building will best beet relieve the the overcrowding in other buildings The board is q quite ite content to submit th the matter to the qualified voters voters' of Salt Lake ake CitY The Th The c citizens of Salt Lake City y Ci y have a just pride in their city ity in their schools and in ih the vigorous healthy growth I of both They may maybe be counted u upon on not to shirk the responsibility of oil providing the means for taking care care are of that growth in the schools as aswell aswell well as in the city Salt Lake City 21 1916 S 5 THE BOARD BOARD OF OF EDUCATION OF SALT LAKE CITY S Signed W.
