I I Mr Fox met Billy Possum and Tim Coon one night and told them of a avery avery very good scheme he had thought of for getting all the ducks they wanted that summer If we can dIg a hole said he near a one spring that Is very wide and deep It would fill with water and there will be our pond Of course aU all the ducks will come there to swIm and the rest as you both can see I Iam Iam am sure will be easy Ot Of course we will leave an Island In the middle for our home so we will be surrounded by ducks oYes o Yes and by water too said Billy Possum who was not fond ot of water vater because he had once been thrown Into a pond when he played his possum trIck will VIII there be any trees on the Island asked Tim Coon who was always always al- al ways shy ot of trees especially It if he was beIng chased by Mr Dog Well Ven of course It if YOU two are goIng going go- go Ing to think of an all the things that might happen but wont won't said Mr Fox walking away there Is no use bothering to talk with you Ill I'll see Mr Dear Bear lie Isn't afraid ot of anything But Tim Coon or Billy Possum did not wish to be left lett out of what might be a very easy life lIte so they ran after Mr Fox and told him they would help to dig the pond It w s pretty hard work but Mr Fox kept encouraging them by telling I how many ducks would come to their pond and after acter awhile tHey had It I finished The island In the middle where they lived had plenty of rocks bu but no trees just as Mr Fox had said and there ther the I three waited and waited for tor the ducks to come and swim I Two days passed and no ducks s carne came I Mr Coon did not feel as unhappy at as his friend Billy Possum because because be- be cause he sometimes eats things that come out of the water but when he found that there were no oysters or fish In thIs pond he grew very with Mr Fox I I feel teel like an ll ot of my fifty teeth on Mr Fox said Billy Possum the third day Mr Possum had that I number of teeth and was was very proud ot of I It But what Is the use of havIng I them he said to TIm Jf if you have no noI use for tor them I That night Mr Fox who was rather worrIed and not sleeping well heard Tim and Dilly Billy talking over a plan to get even with him for tor getting them on onan an Island to starve and he thought It I was time he was movIng for what they planned to do the next day was to make Mr 1 Fox drink aU all the water in the pond so they could get away I We will hold his head right In the water until he drinks the pond dry said Tim Coon so when they were fast I asleep Mr lox Fox slipped down to the water and plunged In lie He was not so very fond of swimming swim swim- I ming but he could when he was pushed to it it and thIs was one of the times Umes he felt pushed I lie He was on on the bank on the other side in a few minutes and off to a farm tarm not tar far away for Mr Fox was sure sure he felt his backbone every time he rubbed his stomach he was so hungry When he had eaten an all he wanted oft off home he ran without a thought or of poor Tim Coon or Billy Bilty Possum on the Island wIthout any food tood and no boat In which to get away The pond was some distance from where Mr Foxs Foxe home was and so he had no way ot of knowing what happened happened hap hap- to Tim and Dilly Billy and in truth Mr Fox did not care Tomorrow I will tell what happened to the two friends he had treated so shabbily Copyright 1919 by the McClure Newspaper News News- paper SyndIcate New York OIt City I |
