Show I Marriage Grows S More Risky y i 31 fOne f- f One in Ends Nine Ends in DiVorce ASHINGTON March Approximately one out of every nine W WASHINGTON marriages is terminated by divorce according to figures compiled by the bureau of the census and made public today Excluding South Carolina where all laws permitting divorces were repealed in 1878 the three lowest divorce rates in 1916 for fol which year returns are now complete are shown for fol the District of Columbia North Carolina and New York where the rates were 1331 and 32 per of population respectively The highest rates were returned for fol Nevada Montana and Oregon which show and respectively In all states except Maine West Virginia South Carolina Alabama Mississippi North Dakota South Dakota and Colorado the divorce rates were higher in 1916 than in 1906 Desertion is shown by the figures to have been the cause for about 38 per cent of the divorces Records also showed that the marriage rate in 1916 was 1050 pelI per pel I or nine times as great as the divorce rate of per I |
