Show MICHIGAN BANKERS HfflUCODENT Cylinder Bursts While on LaKe Erie; Passengers Are Transferred. CLEVELAND, O., June 18. Two - - hundred members of the Michigan Bankers' association, who started on pleasure jaunt, leaving Detroit yesterday yes-terday afternoon on the Detroit and Buffalo line steamer Western States, are on their way to Buffalo on the steamer City of Cleveland- thia morning, morn-ing, after having been transferred from the Western States following the disabling of that boat in midlake last night. Wireleea telegraphy was responsible for the quick rescue, and it waa the first time in the history of the great lakes that the wirelesa was put to suck practical teat. The Western States was disabled bv the bursting of a evl- inder, and though she waa in no immediate im-mediate danger, the party of financiers decided to leave her when the City of Clevelend, responding to distress signals, sig-nals, came alongside. The -accident to the Western States occurred off Amherstburg. Ontario, shortly after dark. The bursting of the cylinder followed the breaking of a bolt in a high pressure engine. The engineer waa slightly scaldeai, but no h other persons were injured. The wireless wire-less call for help was sent out imme-aiatelv imme-aiatelv and the City of Cleveland and the Eastern States responded. The former vessel was only a short distance awav and started for the disabled boat, the Eastern States being informed that her aid was not needed. When the City of Cleveland arrived the bankers held a conference and decided not to stav aboard the Western States. The two boats were then lashed together and the gangplanks set. The eea was calm and the transfer was made without with-out accident. It was after midnight when the Citv of Cleveland left the stranded vessel, hound for Buffalo. The Western Statea turned her nose toward Detroit and. is attempting to reach that port, traveling by mean, of her low power enginea. |
