Show DEATH OF CHARLES D. LANE. The California newapapera bring the newa of the death of Charles D. Lane at his Palo Alto, Cal.. home last Friday, aged 72. Who did not know Charlie Lane.? He waa born in Palmyra. Mo., No-veniber No-veniber 15, 1840, crossad tha plains with Jiis father, who settled in Stockton. Cal. Charlie wan then 12 yearn of age. He worked a short time on a farm, hut soon went to the mines and.waa a miner ever after. He made his first stake on Snake river, Ida., wax in every Nevada camp; then with Hayworth and Hohart bought the I'tiea mine at Angel's Camp. Cal., which mada him a fortune; then he made a second fortune in Alaska. He was prominent promi-nent in politics in the '90s and was the man who nominated William J. Bryan for president in lS9ri. He was a gonial and generous, hut most earnest man. and his energy had no limits. No misfortune could daunt him ; when very poor he whs sure he was going to he rich. When his wealth came it did not spoil him at all ; he was the same Charlie Lane, except that he was all the more anxious to do good. Without much schooling he went out among iii fellow men to win his way and he succeeded by the force of his will, his industry and integrity. He lived an honored and useful life; he earned the rest that has come to him, and thousands of friends all over the went, as they wave their farewells to him, will pray that his sleep may be sweet. |
