Show GOLD QUARTZ AT ELY. The workmen emplnrv'ed in digging the water ditch for Ely City, south of the townsite, have foiuxl fine specimens of gold quartz at a dfipth of four feet, says the White Pine Ikews. Among the workmen employed in the ditch were two experienced miners. Black and Rov. and thev at once saw the value of the rock and reported the matter to Superintendent George An-nand. An-nand. Mr. Annand is of the opinion that the gold quart.': was washed from the neighboring hjlls. Miners who at faniliar with placer mining think that as in the old davs of Ely gold running $2D to the ton was taken from Robmsnra canyon, and gold has been found in thu mountains east of the camp, there must be good placer digging in Steptoe valley in the gravel underneath the surtee soil. They think that the rains of age must have washed vast quantifies of rold from Robinson canyon into the valley, and that gold must have bren emrried into the lowlands low-lands from the mountains to the west. The workmen in the water litch told of the finding of gold while building the water svstetn, and this, eomnined with the discovery of nuggets In the ciaws of chickens, starter! a rush for placer ground in Steptoe valley. A number of ETly men went out ves terdav nnd took up ground northeast of the F.lv itv trwnsite. Hundreds of acres were taken up. It is probable that Steptoe vailey wi'l be thoroughly prospected for placer gold. Several of the men who have taken up placer claims state that they intend to make open cut to solid for mation to determine whether the theories the-ories that the gravel contains gold are correct . |
