The auditorium of the Firat Methodist Method-ist ehureh was filled to its capacity. The audience was made up in large part of singers and students, to whom the ainging of the magnificent contralto con-tralto waa part of a liberar education. Madam rchumann-Heink in appearance appear-ance ft Hke a bighearted German mother, which she is the mother of half a dozen bright -children and happv in her home life. But when her throat' givea forth those marvels of sound, one forgets that she is a woman forgets everything in education for the musi- I rian. Schumann-Heink 'a program was a I varied one, but pleasingly popular. It included selections from Kossi. Frani Schubert, Hugo Wolf. Liszt, Schumann and Brahms, closing with the solo of Fides from the prison scene in'Mever-beer's in'Mever-beer's "The Prophet." The latter was ! the real gem of the evening and the Madam waa compelled to return several times and acknowledge the enthusiastic reception by the audience. During the evening she gave as an encore the drinking song from "Lucretia Hnrgia." which the audience compelled her to repeat re-peat time and again. Madam Schumann-Heink 's accompanist accompan-ist is Miss Helen Schaul. who was likewise like-wise most cordially received and made 4 most' favorable impression by her selections from Liszt and (treig. |
