The official text of PrjMJant Roosevelt's amendment of thi. Txehision bill has been published. As t-cpected, it has created the strongest dissatisfaction among the interested in-terested parties, although their movements move-ments of, proeednre have not yet assumed as-sumed a definite shape. The Japanese residents of the Hawaiian Ha-waiian Islands have telegraphed President Presi-dent Roosevelt and the Hawaiian representatives rep-resentatives in the House indicating the seriousness of the injury which will b caused to thtir rights and interests by this legislation. Toe leaders of opinion here are aware, however, that under the circumstances the only alternative is to calmly resign themselves to the situation, situ-ation, hoping that the Government can arrange with the American authorities to reduce the sacrifice in the interests f Japanese immigrants to a minimum. They regret the new law lest the San Francisco residents, glorying in their tucccss should assume an overbearing tttitude. News of this kind would oulj tend to injure Jspanese susceptibilities, which President Koosevelt has been spe tially careful to avoid. |
