Show SPECTACDLAR PLIGHT Of FREIGHT CAR FORCES THE UNITED TO SEEK SAFETY Passenger train No. 2 (the Overland Limited, eastbound) ws delayed five hours yesterday by a runaway freight car that hroke from a train on the siding sid-ing twelve miles east of Welle, and ran half way back to that station before it jumped the track. The Southern Pacific grade east of Wells is one of the heaviest on the line, and the freight bad toiled slowly up hill to Moor Siding when the accident occurred. All of the cars had taken the siding to let the Limited pass, when a coupling broke, releasing one of the cars, which started down grade at a fortv-mile clip. The Limited was roming from the west, and the engineer, taking in the situation at a glance, ran onto a siding and awaited developments. The spectacular spec-tacular flight of the freight came to sn end just before it reached the siding, when it .jumped the track and was wrecked immediately in the path cf the Limited. After a wait of several hours the track was cleared and the passengT train proceeded. |
