They were in a building adjoining ad-joining tbat in which a fatal explosion occurred and which was. Itself, partly demolished. Although four other persons per-sons were killed and more than a score were injured none of the Salt Lakers received so much as a scratch. Secretary Raybould of the Salt Lake lodge was several blocks away at the time of the accident, but hastened to the scene. Afterward he said that he had trembled for the probable fate of the Elks from his city whom he knew to be in the adjoining building. He re- gards their escape as miraculous. When it was found that all had escaped injury the entire Utah party assembled and joined in what closely resembled a service ser-vice of praise and thanksgiving. Many of the visiting Elks attended a running matinee at the Ascot track yesterday and several of them are re ported to have made a "killing" on the win of Cigarlighter in the Elks' special event. They are said to have carried away about $3000. Joseph Dederichs, formerly of Salt Lake, entertained the officers of the visiting lodge at a reception yesterday. Dederichs has erected a magnificent residence near Westlake Park. "Tom" Homer, exalted ruler in Salt Lake Citv, presided at the initiation of thirteen "candidates last night.
