Baekkua appeared in court and rare bond. Thirteen other indictments ware returned, but Judge Kinkead refused to allow them to be made publie until tka persona named have been taken into custody. Backhua had recently been the "star witness" in a civil investigation before be-fore Master in Chancery George B. Oker into the affairs of the Columbus Savings Trust company, and his testimony tes-timony in that connection resulted in disclosures which involved former State Treasurer W. 8 MeKinnon, now deceased; de-ceased; former Bute Treasurer Isaac B. Cameron and former Treasurer C. C. Oreen. Buekhus, among other things, alleged that all of these officials had profiled from the interest on state funds which were placed with the Columbus Co-lumbus Havings a- Trust company. In his testimony Backhns also confessed that he mntflated the bank records to cover op certain transactions and that ho burned some of the bank a books to prevent inspectors who had been placed on the trail by Governor Harmon from obtaining them. John J. Chester attorney for former State Treasurer laaac B. Cameron, made thie statement last night. "I was served with notice today that Mr. Cameron had been indicted on a charge of making illegal deposits of state funds. I have arranged with Mr. Cameron that the latter will go to the courthouse tomorrow and give bond in the sum of $5000, which I understand is the amount required in the case. We have no secrets in the matter, and my client desires the fullest investigation into the ebargea against him.'1 |
