Show BRITAIN PURCHASES ATLANTIC CABLE j leONIKrN. March 1 :. Purchase of a direct cable to the I'nited States was announced by H. I'ike Pease, assistant postrnastcr-gencral, in the house of commons last niyjit during an explanation explan-ation of postoffiee estimates in the pending budget bill. He said the British Brit-ish government had acquired lhe cable for Jt: 570,000, Including $100,000 worth of cable stock and three cabin stations at Hullinaskelligs, Ireland : Harbor Grace, Newfoundland, Rye Beach, N. H., and Halifax. "The cable that has been bought Is intended as a reserve for the existing imperial cable, and has been leased for a short time to lhe Western I'nion-company I'nion-company for 57.000 a year. Mr. Pease remarked that a new cable would have est l: 1.000,000. |
