Attorney Brands School Compulsion Law Tool Thing' Dan B. Shields Hits at 'Waste' in Talk to Salt Lake Kiwanis Club Compulsory education was labeled a "fool thing" by U. S. Attorney At-torney Dan B. Shields in an address to the Kiwanis club at the Hotel Utah Thursday. Reviewing developments over the last 20 yesrs, the time the club has existed, Mr. Shields touched on public health, old sge pensions, unfair un-fair practices legislation snd prohibition, pro-hibition, but directed his critclsm chiefly at law requiring children to attend achooL "Compulsory education laws are bad In many respects," he charged. "They force children who never could learn anything to go to school. There Is a waste of time and the progress of other children is Impeded. Im-peded. "I dare say that In each Salt Lake City school there are 25 children incapable of being educated, and by forcing them to go to school, we sre putting the capable stu-dents stu-dents ht a disadvantage."
