Just as a submarine or a deep sea diver is able to go beneath the ' waves for a long period of time and still breathe fresh air. so can the water scorpion atay under water, breathing through its tail. The scorpion's air tube ia formed by two grooved talf-tubes which are brought together and held In contact when an air hose connected with the surface ia needed. It extends from the tail end of the body and is used when the beetle is lying in quite shallow water. DAY OF MYSTERY . . . On May 12, 1780, New England waa plunged into a strange darkness which lasted from 10 a. m. until nightfall. The darkness was so obscure in many sections that work was halted, birds went to roost and domestic fowl acted as during an eclipse. There were no clouda reported seen, although a light rain fell. ' Attempts at explanation have identified the darkness as resulting from higb-flying smoke clouds from a Canadian forest fire or drifting volcanic ash from an unrecorded eruption, such as occurred in 1S&3 after the eruption of Krakatoa. |
