Stanley was awaiting a conference with District Attorney William & Dun ford of Provo before filing any charges againat the youth. Dunford was reportedly deer hunting and eould not be reached immediately. According to the story told Sheriff Virgil Fraughton by the boy, hia mother and stepfather had been arguing over the name In whieb a ' mining claim was to be filed. Argue Over Claim The mother, Mrs. Sarah Wallen Sweat, told the sheriff her aon had found some outcroppings of ore en a side hill and she was Insisting that the mining claim be filed in hie nam. Sweat, she aald, wanted the claim In hi own name. "I fired In defense of my mother the lad was quoted by the sheriff as saying. "He (referring to his stepfather) had been drinking and was choking her. I was afraid be would kill her." The sheriff said Mrs. Sweat upheld up-held her son's story that her husband hus-band had choleiU bar. They had had some disputes In the several year they had been married, (he said, but had elways "kissed and mad up." Call Relayed The call .or th sheriff was relayed re-layed by Dora Bronson. who was at the Murdoch ranch, a mil east of the Sweat station. ' The sheriff found Sweat crumpled up where he had fallen. After a preliminary Investigation, aa Inquest In-quest was called by Justice of the Peace R. C. Buys and conducted by County Attorney Stanley. Members of th Jury, L. J. Colman. William Dahlman and Eldon - Ritchie, held that Sweat cam to his death from a "SOS gauge rifle in th hands of Edison Ricord. who fired In defense of his mother." . |
