Oct. 27 (UP) Fifty million workers in the United States lose approximately $2,000,000,000 annually through injury or personal illness, most of which could have been prevented, the American College of Surgeons estimated today after a year's in- dustrial survey. " The common cold "still Is the? greatest cause of absenteeism." Dr. M. N. Newquiest, Chicago, assistant director of the college, told the 3000 assembled surgeons. "Since much of the absenteeism in Industry is preventable, we then have additional tangible objectives toward which an industrial health program should be directed," he added. His report, part of a symposium on industrial medicine, detailed a survey of 116 companies employing 352.591 persons. It showed, he said, that industrial Injuries amounted to approximately one-half day per person. per-son. The average worker lost 15 times as much from nonindustrial injuries and illnesses as he did from industrial injuries. A survey of 299 organizations representing rep-resenting 1,237,775 workers showed an average medical cost of (5.11 per employe for 1936. compared to $6.30 per employe in 1932. These firms, he said, employed a full-time first aid room attendant and a qualified physician. |
