Solemn Ceremony in Cathedral Marks Consecration By CLARENCE WILLIAMS In a ceremony replete with brilliance, a priest long associated associ-ated with religious and civic affairs af-fairs in Salt Lake City Thursday Thurs-day was consecrated and installed in-stalled a bishop in one of the most important rites in the Catholic church's liturgy in the Cathedral of the Madeleine, It was the first time a Catholic hkhnp has been consecrated In I 'tab. At the hand of the Most Rev. John J. Mitty, D. D., archbishop of San Francisco, who was cons-crator. cons-crator. assisted by the Most Rev. Thomas K. Gorman, D. D., bishop of Reno, and the Most Rev. Robert J. Armstrong. D. D.. bishop of Sacramento, Sac-ramento, coconsecrators, the genial Monsignor Hunt became the Most Rev. Duane G. Hunt, D. D bishop of the Salt Lake Catholic diocese. Jammed to capacity with high officials, representing the city, county, state, military, other church denominations, and members of the Catholic hierarchy as well as a membership from all walks of life, the beautiful cathedral was quiet with the exception of the voices of those conducting the consecration, which were clearly heard in every nook and corner of the Lord's house. Throng Arrives Early The cathedral rapidly filled with persons eager to attend such an unusual ceremony, long before the more than two-hour function started start-ed at 10 a. m. Many close friends of the new bishop had come long distances to see a favorite churchman church-man elevated to surh a fliatintiiah.1 crlesiastical position. To Archbishop Mitty. who, as metropolitan met-ropolitan of the province in which the diocese of Salt Lake Is located, was commissioned by His Holiness. Pope Pius XI, to consecrate the bishop-elect, the ceremony bore deep significance. Bishop Hunt served under Archbishop Arch-bishop Mitty as chancellor and vicar general when Archbishop Mitty waa the third bishop of the Salt Lake diocese from 192 to 1932. D., was bishop were recalled to the minds of the laity when Bishop Kearney, relinquishing his post to Bishop Hunt to become bishop- designate des-ignate of the Rochester, N. The solemn moment of consecration consecra-tion was at hand. Then the consecrating prelate, followed fol-lowed by his assistants, touched the head of the bishop-elect, and spoke: "Receive the Holy Ghost." Continues Prayer v The consecrator then continued the prayer interrupted by the hymn and the anointing, and asked that Hishop Hunt be filled Inwardly with the spirit of God, and be clothed outwardly with the same spirit. Also, that "constant faith, pure love, sincere sin-cere piety may abound In him and that he may be granted the faculty of reconciliation In word and deed." s He prayed also that Bishop Hunt's preaching may not be in the persuasive words of human wisdom, wis-dom, but in the showing of spirit and power; that God grant to him the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven ' to "use unto edification, not unto dest ruction." "Whatsoever he shall bind upon earth, let It be bound also In heaven; whatsoever he shall loose upon a earth shall be loosed In heaven; whose sins he shall retain, let them be retained, and do Thou remit the sins which he shall remit . With uncovered head the bishop-elect bishop-elect arose and replied: "With my be the faithful and prudent servant ser-vant whom Thou dost set over Thy household May he detest pride, cherish humility and truth, never desert it, overcome either by flattery flat-tery or by fear. Be Thou his authority, au-thority, his power, his strength. s Multiply upon him Thy blessing and Thy grace, so that by Thy gift he may always be worthy to obtain Thy mercy and by that same grace, may be ever faithful," was the closing prayer. Choir Sings Tsalm At the close of the prayer. Arch-bi.-hop Mitty Intoned the antiphon. which speaks of the anointing v of Aaron, brother of Moses. In the Old Testament, while the choir continued con-tinued singing the 131,'nd Psalm. "Behold how good and how pleasant pleas-ant it is for the brethren to dwell together In unity." Meanwhile, a strip of linen cloth was placed on the neck of Bishop Hunt and the consecrator anoint- episcopal office, which is used by Bishop Hunt, already had been blessed and the ceremony was not repeated. The following prayer wss given by ths consecrator: "O God. Pastor and Ruler of all faithful, look down in Thy mercy upon this. Thy servant, whom Thou hast appointed over Thy church, and grant, we beseech Thee, that both by word and example he may edify all those who are under his charge, so that with ths flock entrusted to him, hs may attain to lifs everlasting" whole heart I wish in all things to consent and obey." Ths consecrator continued the Interrogation In-terrogation and the bishop-elect was finally asked concerning his belief In ths Holy Trinity snd his exact understanding of his religious beliefs. Prays for Faith The consecrating prelate then offered of-fered this prayer: "May this faith be incressed In thee by the Lord unto true snd eternal happiness, dearest brother in Christ." The bishop-elect then kissed the ring of the consecrator, and all the prelates, coming to the foot of the altar, began the opening prayers of ths mass. Ths maas said was that of the Apostles 8lmon and Jude. At the conclusion of ths prsy-ers prsy-ers at ths foot of the altar. Archbishop Arch-bishop Mitty ascended the steps and continued the prayers of ths mass. Ths bishop-elect then went to the altar prepared for him and vested in ths robes worn by a bishop celebrating cele-brating mass. Hs slso began the prayers of- msss, reciting them in unison with the consecrating prelate prel-ate and ths coconsecrators. Ths bishop-elect and the assistants assist-ants returned to the foot of the altar and the consecrator read the Instruction. At this point the prelates prel-ates knelt while the choir chanted ths Litany of Saints. Instead of kneeling, the bishop-elect, prostrated pros-trated himself on the altar steps during the prayer. Toward the end of the chanting, Archbishop Mitty arose and sang, three times, special spe-cial petitions for the new prelate. Then the solemn moment of consecration con-secration began. ed his hands with the prayer: "May these hands be anointed with the sacred oil and the chrism of sanctification, as Samuel anointed anoint-ed David to be king and prophet; so may they be anointed and consecrated." con-secrated." Making a sign of the cross thrice ever the hands of the new bishop, he said: "In the name of the Father and , of the Son and of the Holy Ghost, ' making the Image of the Holy Cross of our Savior Jesus Christ, who has redeemed us from death, and led us to the kingdom of heaven. Hear us. O loving Almighty Eternal God and grant that we may obtain what we ask. through the same Christ Our Lord." Seated once more, the consecrator s . crators, the newly enthroned bishop returned to the chapel, and seated, his head was cleansed with bread crumbs and a cloth. His hair, too, was cleansed and combed and his hands washed. Archbishop Mitty and Bishop Hunt continued the mass up to the conclusion of the gospel. The sermon was then delivered by Bishop Kearney. After the credo, ths offertory was recited and ths consecrating prelate sat on the footstool and the consecrated bishop came from his chapel between the assistant bishops, bish-ops, knealt before the consecrator and offered him the traditional gifts, consisting of two lighted tapers, ta-pers, two loaves of bread one silvered sil-vered and the other gilt and two small casks of wine. Mass Celebrated The mass of consecration then began. be-gan. Standing at the right of the Obedience Pledged At ths conclusion of ths final blessing given by Bishop Hunt, Archbishop Mitty, making three distinct reverences, Intoned the centuries-old formula of congratulation with these words: "Ad Multoa An-nos An-nos Unto Length of Years!" Ths prelates then arose and embraced em-braced In the kiss of peace. The clergy of the diocese of the new bishop advanced to him while he sat on ths episcopal throne, knealt before him and promised him fidelity and obedience. A word of greeting was then given to Bishop Hunt and he delivered deliv-ered his first address to his faithful. faith-ful. Following the reading of the papal letters, the bishop-elect knelt on the lowest step of the altar and read aloud an oath of fidelity and allegiance al-legiance to the Holy See, promising obedience to Pope Pius and to his successors.
