Show Kid McCoy Embarks on Ninth Marital Adventure And Must Hope This One Will Be Real 'McCoy' RUSHVILLE, Ind.. Aug. 3 (INS) Kid McCoy, who ruled aa middleweight mid-dleweight champion of the world in the late '90s, waa embarked today to-day on his ninth marriage. Wedded to Mrs. Sue Cobb Cowley, Cow-ley, 44, of Detroit, here in his home town yesterday, McCoy planned to return to Michigan today to-day with his bride for a brief honeymoon. McCoy, whose real name is Norman Nor-man Selby, is employed in the per aonnel department of a Detroit automobile manufacturing company, com-pany, where he went to work after his parole from San Quen-tin Quen-tin July 21, 1932. He served a seven-year term in the California penitentiary as the convicted slayer of his sweetheart, Mrs. Theresa Mors, whom he claimed killed herself.. McCoy came back to his home town to be married to Mrs. Cowley and the ceremony was performed by the Rev. R. Melvin Thompson at the home of the ex-fighter's cousin, Glen E. Foster. The bride, a native of Kentucky, aaid she is a niece of Irvin Cobb, tha actor and humorist. The bridegroom remarked that although this is his ninth marriage, mar-riage, it Is ths first of his comeback, come-back, which he termed his "second "sec-ond trip back to earth." All his former wives are re ported to be living. McCoy jokingly jok-ingly remarked he might "have to get out my scrapbook" to list them in order. He married and divorced one of them three times, desertion being the usual claim in their petition for separation. As a boxer. Kid McCoy fouRht 200 bouts and lost only six. He won the middleweight crown in 1896 by defeating Bill Dougherty in Johannesburg, South Africa. Undefeated as a middleweight, he met many heavyweights of his time and beat many of them, including in-cluding Joe Choynski and Pete Maher. He lost, however, to Jim Corbett and Tom Sharkey. |
