When commissions are secured, their pay la sufficient to tske care of the needs of their families snd ths allowance Is discontinued. The course consists of five months of training, srranged In four periods preliminary, elementary, applied and advanced. . The preliminary period, of five weeka duration, Is spent st the United States navy steam engineers' school, where Instruction Is given In the construction con-struction of mschlnery used on board ship. Military drill Is also Included. The applied oourss constats of ten weeks. One week Is spent on ferries, one week on aound steamers, ons week in boiler shops, one week in engine shops and six weeks en a cruise overseas. over-seas. The advanced course, four weeks In duration, is devoted to the study of routins operation. Men who successfully complete the course will be commissioned ensigns.
