It Is believed that a wrong opinion is i being formed of the work of the county 1 among: Its poor class. Pauper Clerk Sabine wishes it understood by the public that the county, in connection with .the charitable institutions, is taking ta-king care of all persons who are needy and worthy of aid. in this city and county. Information can be received j from the clerk as to the circumstances of any person who may seek assistance by petition or otherwise. As an example of one wy in which the public -may be imposed upon and undeserving: persons be aided, the case of a woman who lives on West Third South street may be cited. Recently a I petition was circulate to the f.Tect ' that this woman was tick and that the County Commissioners had refused to help her. This is a case that the county coun-ty has been taking- care of for years. The woman has three children, and although al-though the county has orTered to take care of the two younger ones and has attempted to get the other to go to school all efforts have been unavailing. The woman has been offered several places at desirable employment, but she will accept none. The Commissioners Commission-ers secured her transportation to Maryland last year, but she was back here again in less than two months. Mr. Sabine said that a case on South Sixth West had been mifrepre-sented; that the county had furnished the family fam-ily in Question -with J8 worth of groceries gro-ceries and a half ton of coal within one week after the case had come to their notice. |
