Show AMERICAN IS VICTOR Travis Wins Over Britishers British-ers in the London Golf Tournament. LONDON, June 2. In the fifth round of the golf contests at Sandwich today Walter J. Travis beat H. H. Hilton, the former British champion, by five up and four to play, thus reaching the semi-final. ...,,. H. G. Hutchinson beat R. Maxwell, the pnpsent holder of the champlonr.hlp. TtTrVis made a splendid start and won, his fnwt and second, where Hilton was bunkered. Travis took the third. After four halves he led by four at the eighth, but lost the ninth through slightly slicing slic-ing the second shot. He was three up at the turn. Hilton won the eleventh, but theieafter Travis played grand golf, winning the next three holes. He brought the match to an end at the fourteenth, where he laid a full Iron hot dead. The American's victory over the open and amateur ex-champio'n caused a great sensation on the links. In the semi-final Travis beat Hutch-tnson Hutch-tnson by four up and two to play. E. D. Blackwell beat J. Laldley by two up and one to play. Travis and Blackwell therefore will meet in he final tomcrrow. ' This is the first time an American ever made any prominent show here in a golf championship cham-pionship contest. Blackwell, who is a member of the royal snd ancient club, played a . consistently good game throughout the meeting. |
