Reading has been treated to a new version of Barbara Frietchie. V . Jacob Phlllippl and his wife recently had a quarrel and Phlllppt left home. When he returned - his wife refused to admit him and locked all the doors and windows. He notified her to vacate the houB,. but she refused and hauled a big American flag to a pole on the roof, as a signal of her defiance.' When Phillppl saw the flag he resolved upon extreme measures. For two hours he went about town gathering together his friends. When he had collected about fifty he provided the company with tin horns and led them in parade to his house. - They tooted a serenade on the sidewalk for a few moments while Mrs. Phillppl booted derision from an upper ; window, and dared them to haul down the nag. Phillppl and his valiant cohorts responded respond-ed readily. At a signal from the husband they broke in the front door and invaded the fortress. After that there was nolse. When it had subsided Phillppl was In possession, the flag was down and Mrs. Phillppl and the furniture were on the sidewalk. |
