Show COUNCILWAR GROWS HOT : ? Bitter Contests Orer flayer's flay-er's Appointments Is Expected Tonight. The Republican members of the City Council will, it is understood, try tonight to-night to break the slate of appointments appoint-ments made by Mayor Morris, at the last meeting. The Republicans are holding out for Dr. M. R. Stewart for Health Commissioner; Commis-sioner; L. C. Kelsey, City Kngineer; J. F. MacKnight, Land and Water Commissioner; Com-missioner; James Devine, Chief of the Fire department, -and Chief Lynch of the Police department. No special fight is being made for Frank Hlnes. Superintendent of Waterworks, Water-works, it appears, as there, is no Republican Re-publican Councilman from' his ward, the Fourth. Some concessions to the Mayor's slate will be made. Peter S. Condie, a Republican who worked for the election of Mayor Morris, will, it is said, be permitted to remain as Superintendent Super-intendent of Streets and Irrigation. Most of his clerks are Republicans. |
