On account of the exhausting effects of an examination ex-amination by the physicians, the Senator's Sen-ator's temperature, pulse and respiration respi-ration hare not been read for several hours. It is noticeable, however, that he is gT owing 'weaker continuously. ' . ; , WASHINGTON.' Feb. 13. Senator Hanna has been unconscious since 3 a. m. 'and practically so for forty-eight hours. Crisis in Early Morning.: The crisis came this morning when shortly after 3 o'clock the Senator had another sinking spell.- Drs. Osier and Butcher were hurriedly summoned and ' . Not responding respond-ing to .their efforts, Xten Hanna was notified no-tified of the serious turn in his father's fath-er's condition. A consultation followed! and it was decided, to waken the entire family. . -- Unconscious Since Friday. Except to talk' or know about his own case, the physicians, state that since) Friday afternoon . Mr. Hanna practically practi-cally was unconscious. v -' ' At 8 o'clock, the usual hour for the morning bulletin, the Senator, was steadily; sinking. . Since the morning bulletin was Issued by the doctors all tidings from the sickroom were of the same tenor that the patient was slowly sinking and steadily growing weaker, 'and that life was only being prolonged by lnjejctions and oxygen. .. . . Family Stays at Bedside. ' The members of the family' who were hastily summoned to the bedside early this morning remained dsse by since, coming and going from the Senator's room to the sick chamber. The strain has been a severe one to them. There was a constant stream of callers call-ers at the Arlington all" morplng,anx-" lously inquiring of the Senator's condition. condi-tion. Secretary Hay arrived at the Arlington about S o'clock and ' was shown up to the private apartments where IL. M. Hanna, the ..Senator's brother, advised him of the patient's condition. Telephone connection was established with the White- House .early this morning and all bulletins are promptly telephoned to the President. Day and Sight of Anxiety. AU day yesterday and most of last night It was felt that the Senator's condition con-dition had reached an acute stage, and the family made preparations for the worst. Becoming exhausted through ceaseless watching and' waiting,. 'they retired late in the night, but at 4 o'clock this morning, following a sinking spell which made it apparent that the distinguished dis-tinguished patient was nearlng his end. the family were roused and entered the sick chamber. . . . . lit- the meantime messages were sent to Gov. Herrick. Gen. Dick, Senators Scott and Klttredge, William Nelson Cromwell and others, advising of Mr. Hanna's critical condition," and shortly thereafter they had assembled in a room adjacent to that in which the Senator lay. President Roosevelt was notified. ' . A ray of hope was given the family and friends when; at 4 o'clock, after e saline injection of brandy was given. Mr. Hanna rallied slightly. Heroic Methods Employed.. At 9:30 a. m. Dr. Itlxey left, and about half , an hour, later Dr. Osier went to Baltimore, leaving' Dr. Butcher in charge of the patient. He continued the the application of the heroic methods employed. In- the struggle to . prolong life. . Gov. Herrick of Ohio and other close personal friends of ,the Senator plied the doctors with questions when opportunity oppor-tunity presented itself to extract some ray of hope from their repllesbut no encouragement could be given. " ' Among those calling at the hotel this morning were Secretary Hitchcock and Secretary Taft, Senators Foraker, Al-drieh, Al-drieh, Spooner and Hale and Justice William R. Day of the United States Supreme court.' Senators - Scott and Klttredge and- Gen. Dick, who were among those to arrive durinir the early morning hours remained at the hotel throughout. ....... Mrs. Hanna Holds Up Well. Mrs. Hanna, who had remained at the bedside or in the room adjoining the Senator's since early morning, temporarily tempo-rarily withdrew at 11:45 o'clock. She has held up under the ordeal remarkably remark-ably well. At that hour Mr. Dover announced, upon coming from the Senator's room, that he was perceptibly weaker. All was still' in the sickroom save for the movements of the - doctor and nurses and the coming and going of members of the family.- Life Hangs by a Thread. A few "minutes after noon Daniel Hanna came from his father's room and announced to those in the Senator's office that there had been no change. Although nine hours had elapsed since the . beginning of the sinking spell, throughout the entire time the. end had been expected at any moment. Life was hanging by but a small thread, but the pulse was scarcely perceptible. per-ceptible. During the latter period oxygen oxy-gen had. been relied upon more than the stimulants and hypodermics to keep the last spark from being extinguished. |
