Show Tb3 Utvn Protects the Law-Breakers. The Salt Laker who desires a complete, unbiased report of thetestimony in the, Smoot case will not get It If he reads the Deserted News, the official spokesman of the Mormon leaders. This priestly organ is not printing the Associate ed Tress dispatches as they are delivered to that rare type of journalistic propriety. Whenever there is a chance to protect one of the church officials who has been seri6usl involved by some especially nasty evidence, this model of truth and honesty promptly proceeds TO MUTILATE THE ASSOCIATED PRESS REPORTS and eliminate the part of the news which deals the church, official so deadly a blow. Take the story of the executive session held yesterday yes-terday by the Senate committee at which the evidence evi-dence concerning the divorce obtained by Apostle Teasdale was read and discussed. Describing that evidence the Associated Press report said: "THE EVIDENCE IN THE TEASDALE DIVORCE DI-VORCE IS' UNPRINTABLE." j Yet . we see no such statement in the Deserted ' News report of the day's session of the Senate com- J mittee. To read the church organ one would believe that the divorce evidence in the case of this member of the high "Quorum of the Twelve" was too dry and stale to print, when in truth the Associated Press report says it was TOO NASTY FOR THE PUBLIC TO READ. In fact, by suppression, downright lying and misrepresentation, the Deserted News has from day to day garbled the testimony to the end that it might deceive its readers as to the true situation at the Washington end of the line. But the News can hardly be blamed for the policy pol-icy it is pursuing, for is it not the OFFICIAL ORGAN OR-GAN AND DEFENDER OF THE SET OF HIGH CHURCH OFFICIALS WHO BOLDLY DECLARED DE-CLARED TO THE SENATE COMMITTEE THAT THEY HAD BEEN VIOLATING THE LAWS OF UTAH FOR YEARS AND WOULD CONTINUE TO DEFY THE LAWS OF THIS STATE? |
