The Anchor llrer Kara mania, from Marseilles, Palermo Pal-ermo and Naples,, was detained at quarantine quar-antine today because a number of the crew and passengers died under peculiar pecu-liar circumstances on the voyage. Six died in all. two of the crew and four steerage passengers. All were taken with the same symptoms, cramps, nausea nau-sea and collapse.' It is thought they were poisoned by some noxious gases emanating from the cargo. On February 8th four of the crew were suddenly taken ill with nausea nau-sea and spasms. Two died, one recovered recov-ered and the other was sent ashore to the hospital, where the doctor said the ir.en were poisoned.' Two' days later 4 sailor who slept in the room where the others were taken ill was found in a stupor. On being restored he said he had suffered with the same symptoms. |
