The body of Zeb Long, a negro, was found early today hanging in the woods near East Point, a suburb eight miles south of Atlanta. Long I was locked up in the East Point- jail charged with disorderly disor-derly conduct. The jail was broken into after midnight and J-ong was taken out. The usual mystery surrotmds I the affair. It is not known yet whether Long was sus-?eted sus-?eted of any connection with any of the recent .assaults ,(Jk wjute women. a dozen others within the last two months, and brought a climax. Saturday night the negro population was downtown in masses. A white man was badly cut on' Decatur street, a white pushed off the sidewalkby a negro ou Whitehall street, a white man w-as -cursed by a negro woman on Peters Pe-ters street. . Each of these was s spark wh'eh lit the flame and swept the city for six hours until Sunday morning at 1! o'clock,, when the militia, called out at 11:30 o'clock, got the situation uuder control. A negro charged with attempting to atsault Mrs. Frank Arnold, one of the four attempts which precipitated the race riot, was carried before her for identification. At 8:30 p 'clock the city is fuiet. The seventeen seven-teen companies of State militia are in complete control of the situation. All saloons are closed for the day under un-der the order of the Mayor. Business has assumed normal condi- j tions, the street car schedules have been ! resumed, the schools are open as usual and public confidence is being restored .under the energetic measures taken by the authorities, city, county and State, to maintain order. "Na further outbreak is anticipated. Death List Not Known. ." It is difficult to estimate the total number of dead. Ten bodies of those ' killed in connection with the riots of Satnrdaynight have been prepared fof - buriaL It is repotted on seemingly . jfood authority that, several bodies have ( been taken away for burial and it is equally probable that some deaths have ( not been reported to the police or other authorities. The exact number of dead may not be known for several days. ManyWild Rumors. Various startling rumors of trouble have been brought to the newspaper offices, but nine-tenths of these have been proved absolutely without foundation founda-tion and in other cases marvelous exaggeration exag-geration was shown. The State infantry will be kept on duty for some time. The entire city is being patrolled. The passing of last night without serious trouble is considered consid-ered a hopeful sign. |
