Show WHY THE SHAH YIELDED. The Nation explains one reason why the Shah of Persia has agreed "to give his people a Constitution and a Legislature. It says : j "The entire high priesthood, protesting against the existing regime, left the capital and betook themselves them-selves to the sacred City of Kum. They were followed fol-lowed by no less than 16,000 inhabitants of Teheran, including all the merchants of the city and most of the students, who established a most model camp. The most admirable order is said to have prevailed and in their tent city the Persians revealed on a sudden sud-den a capacity for self-government they had never given signs of among the palaces of the capital. In the face of so vast a cession the Shall yielded, granted grant-ed a national assembly and everybody came back to Teheran." This rage for free government, which has forced the half-barbarous and altogether despotic Shah of Persia to yield to the demands of his people, which has compelled the wise men of China to decide to give that people a Constitution, is now stirring India to its depth and the signs indicate that Great Britain is going to have more trouble there very soon than it has since the great Sepoy rebellion. , The spirit of liberty is abroad in the world, and it is true that when the fathers planted Jhie Stars and Stripe s on our soil they became a beacon light, under which thrones are disintegrating, even as the germs that burrow in the tissues of man perish under the X-ray.
