Show BATTLEf OR CONTROL OF ST. PAUL ROAD; HOVES mm m r mimes NEW TORK. Aug. 2T. A financial battle, with $25,000,000 in cash and the control of the Chicago, Milwaukee ft St. Paul railway 'system. Is on' between J. Plerpont Morgan and E. H. Harrlman. In the battle are Involved twice as many millions of dollars and three times as many thousands of miles 'of railroads as were represented in the famous fight for possession of the Chicago, Burlington t Q'ilncy, which resulted in the memorable memo-rable Northern Pacific corner, when the price of that stock was rushed up .to 11000 a share, and a panic in Wall street followed. How They Line Up. The opposing forces consist of J. P. Morgan, James J. Hill and their friends, foreign capitalists, on one side, riE. H. Harrlman, practical owner of the UnTCri-Southern UnTCri-Southern Pacific roads, with Sir William Van Horne, Sir Thomas Shaughnessy, as controllers of the vast Canadian Pacific system, with their friends, on the other. Remaining neutral for the time being, but inclined to throw their weight to Harrlman. are James H. Smith and William Wil-liam Rockefeller, as principal stockholders stockhold-ers in the St. Paul. Thumbs Up or Down. On the outcome of the war depends whether the St. Paul road Is to be extended ex-tended to the coast, for which purpose a $25,000.000 new stock issue was voted. In a northerly 'direction and so seriously injure in-jure the traffic of the Great Northern and Northern Pacific systems or southerly to, impair the future profits of . the Union-and Union-and Southern Pacific. Mysterious Buying. Early this summer there was a mysterious myste-rious .buying of Pacific Coast line stock.' Before Harrlman or Hill could discover who were the purchasers the Canadian Pacific had obtained a sufficient Interest in the road to wield the balance of , -power. Then the Canadians made overtures to Hill for joint control of all advantages , the line offered In connection with the trade of the coast. Hill Indignantly repulsed re-pulsed them and made his memorable threat to build a line Jnto the Canadian Pacific's territory. The latter turned to Harrlman. but Harrlman was not lm- pressed with the value of any alliance with the Canadians. So the latter fell . back on the St. Paul interests, with which they made an alliance. Harrlman Eyes Opened. Scarcely had that - been accomplished before Harrimaa's eyes bad been opened. Immediately be started to repair bis er- ror by the purchase of St. Paul stock and ' soon had acquired a sufficient Interest in that road to be able to make a .demon- -stratlon against the Smith-Rockefeller Interests. .That, it Is believed. Inclined I the latter to look more favorably on his light for the Pacific coast trade. Upon" the control of the remainder of the float- -. lng stock of the St. Paul depends to which side they will throw their weight' , ultimately. - ' |
