Show VERDICT OF GUILTY UPON TWO COUNTS Richard B. Shepard was found guilty yesterday evening of sending obscene literature through the malls, and also by freight and by express. The Jury, In the Federal court received the case at 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon, and did not reach a verdict until almost five hours afterward. ' Shepard heard the verdict without displaying emotion, and upon motion of District- Attorney Llppman to increase in-crease the defendant's bond from $500 to $1000, readily agreed to provide the extra amount There were seven counts in the Indictment, In-dictment, of which Shepard was found guilty In the first two and not guilty In the remaining five. Through decoy letters sent by Post-office Post-office Inspectors Latimer and McAfee of the Eastern department, and by F. C. Sharp of this district, Shepard was trapped into corresponding with the of-fleers of-fleers regarding the prices for certain objectionable books and into giving information in-formation as to where and how they could be obtained. Shepard was commanded by the court to appear before him within the next two weeks to receive sentence. It is likely that a motion for a new trial will be filed by attorneys for the defense, de-fense, and if this is denied, it Is probable proba-ble that the case will be appealed to the Lnlted States Supreme court. |
