Show MUSIC TRAINS THE YOUNG MIND Miss Emily C. Jessup, a teacher in ths public schools, lectured in the Lafayette school building last night on "Music In the Public Schools." She was assisted by W. A. Wetxell. supervisor of music for Salt Lake's public school system. Many teachers and parents were present. Miss Jessup spoke of music as "an agent in the cultivation of the feelings." Among other remarks. Miss Jessup said, "Music In the schools is the united movement move-ment of all children. That which promotes pro-motes unity and suppresses extreme individuality indi-viduality is the ultimate of the public schools. Music is an agent In the cultivation culti-vation of the feelings. Train the thoughts and feelings and conduct will care for itself. it-self. "Of what use are the fifteen minutes a day during which the children sing the scale and a few exercises?" asked Miss Jessup. Then she answered: "By awakening awak-ening the imagination, the feelings, the emotions in their songs and by being able to listen intelligently to good music they lay ths foundation for the higher duties of life, which in the long run overrule the sordid part of the lives of nations-" Miss Jessup concluded with samples of composition and suggestion of song selections se-lections for various purpose;. |
