Show , Hard Fight in Chambers Case. Three attempts were made yesterday to prevent the case against Fred W. Chambers, Cham-bers, president of the City Council, from goinjr to trial. Early In the morning, H. H. MacmlUlan went to Salt -Lake and applied for a writ of prohibition from the Supreme .court to prevent Judge Howell from proceeding with the case. The writ was denied. The defense then demurred to certain paragraphs contained In the complaint. The demurrer was overruled. A general demurrer to the complaint was then entered. This was also overruled, and the case ordered to trial. When the examination of Jurors commenced, the attorneys at-torneys for the . respective parties Indulged In-dulged In a. long argument as to the right of 'the plaintiffs attorney to consider con-sider the case a criminal one and examine exam-ine the Jurors along that line. The court decided that the case was a criminal one. The entire afternoon -was taken up in securing a Jury to try the case, A large number of witneesee have been subpoenaed subpoe-naed by both sides and it is likely that the case will take several days. The action against Chambers was brought by Attorney J. D. Skeen, who alleged that Chambers had voted himself money to which he was not entitled while a member mem-ber of the City Council. |
