Show I Harmony May Not Prevail in the' I Coming Reunion of Blue and Gray WASHINGTON, D. C. May 10. The protests upon the part of certain Grand Army of the Republic posts throughout through-out the country against the return of the Confederate flags aa authorized by the last Congress, taken In connection with an occurrence in New York city recently lead many to fear that the reunion re-union of the "blue and gray" in this, city on May 11 miy not result in the military love feast its promoters had hoped. , This reunion was organized In St. Louis last 'summer, five Federal and five Confederate veterans being ap pointed to arrange -for the meeting. Among others concerned in the meeting meet-ing are Gen. Joe Wheeler, Gen. G. P. Harrison and Gen. J. S. Chase of Flor- Ida. The Confederate veterans themselves them-selves seem to have entered upon the reunion enthusiastically, and in the South very little unfavorable comment has been Indulged In. though here and there a doubt is expressed as to the genuine usefulness of such a reunion. In New York, vyhlle arrangements were being discussed for the Memorial day May SO parade In that city, it was stated that probably ten posts of the Grand Army of the Republic In Kings county would refuse to march in that parade because the New York camp of Confederate Veterans, as the guest of Grant post, was to have a place near the bead of the line. It has been, suggested sug-gested that these posts should have a parade all of their own, and give the right of line to the Garrison and Beech-er Beech-er posts, which are composed of colored men. MaJ. Walter Thorn, a member of the Smith First Long Island post, haa Informed In-formed Grand Marshal Simmons that he wilUnot serve on his staff on Memorial day, because the Confederate veterans had been asked to participate in the parade. Perry post, which is one of the organizations or-ganizations which can not bring itself to the point of extending the courtesy of a front position in tbe parade to the former Confederates, has adopted resolutions reso-lutions in which Grant post is denounced de-nounced for inviting the Confederates and Grand Marshal Simmons is criticised criti-cised for approving the invitation. They speak of it as Introducing an "element into the parade that is bound In the course of events tD prove a firebrand and a source of discord in ranks where harmony ought to prevail." |
