Show r- r Loyalty I Party I 1 W IL IAM G. G MADOO Mi soundly complains of r the intolerant partisan basis on which our g government functions The criticism is well founded and applies equally to the major political major political parties who are responsible for this particular ill of our government We hear mu much much- h of the people peo peo- pl pI and the country in the stirring days of the national nation l campaign Both parties appeal to the popular lar mind and indicate that if successful at atthe atthe atthe the polls they will devote themselves to furthering furthering further further- ing the interests of the people After the elections these promises and pledges are are forgotten No matter which party is successful suc suc- c at the polls party dominance asserts itself Too much attention is given to the writing of a apolitical apolitical political record Legislation is measured for its effect on the next election rather than on it its worth orth to the country The people lose faith in their officials and a condition is s 's created is to the welfare of the d distinctly contrary govern governs ment mente T We Vie however must remember that the he party plan is our ur accepted form of government The political parties are held responsible for the records records records rec rec- made in congress When When pledges and p promises omis s are broken we have ave recourse in the next e election holding the the party responsible for the actions of the men who embrace its principles This is why the political complexion of our of-our our government government government gov- gov gov gov- is constantly c changing attempted to elect lect individuals without reg regard rd to parties we would soon find ourselves in in ina a worse predicament We would find it much more ore difficult to hold an individual responsible than we do a a. representative party We could h have havo vo little recourse where promises were forgotten forgotten forgotten for for- gotten after election And so while we complain of the th party prejudice we are in the thc position position position-of of having having no no better plan to offer Mr o suggests that we need a a. a large larg organization of intelligent American citizens to hold the balance of power and keep the old parties in line This is easier spoken than accomplished accomplished pushed for this or organization niza ion would naturally be placed in n the position of choosing between the two parties This would h have ve no particular effect on party loyalty and would leave us j just st where we are today If the organization became active and selected its Us own candidates we would but bu have another nother party to claim the devotion devotion- am and fidelity of its adherents No No doubt we need a change which will place national d duty ty above party loyalty we need officials officials officials who will write history for America rather rathe than a partisan record We heed need these things but how we- we weare we are t to get them is not clear clear- to to- the public or to Q Mr r. ir McAdoo |
