Show YEAR OLD YEAR 12 ORPHAN PICKS LOCK IN JAIL POLICE DONT DON'T MISS HIM UNTIL A old 12 orphan boy held for far Minneapolis police picked alock n a lock on n a elt city jail cell with a piece of wire early Thursday and ob tamed two hours of freedom He was not missed until rearrested down town because he couldn't tell officers where he lived The lad was first arrested here Saturday night at the request of Minneapolis authorities who said he had stolen 40 from the boys boys' I detention home there and used it for or bus bUB fare to Salt SaIl Lake City He was lodged in a cell in the women's ward A 5 a. a m. m day jailers were surprised d to see him brought into the jail again After opening his cell door b by flipping the lever which had not cli clicked ked shut with wire he found in the cell he ran through two unlocked doors and nd across the the bridge of sighs connecting jail with police court From there he went down the stairs lairs to the main floor or of the public safety building unoccupied early in the morning and out a window in inthe the automotive bureau Patrolmen J. J W. W Birkinshaw and G. G GM M. M Hopkins saw the boy at Main street and Broadway at a. a m. m and questioned him He said he lived down the street three blocks and when a landlady land land- lady at South Main street was unable to identify him the boy burst into tears Are you ou going to take me to jail he asked Told they were he cried I dont don't want to go 1 Just came from there The surprised of oW 11 cers then obtained his story Later in his cell he related how he came to Salt Lake ke Cit City because because be- be cause just before his mother died she told him it was a wonderful wonder ful ul cil city I took the mone money to come out and live Jive here hele he said Another boy was in on it but he double crossed me and told the cops He said he dIdn't know where he was ns going when he escaped at al 3 a. a m. m A Minneapolis l officer was to arrive Thursday afternoon to return re re- turn the bo boy whose name was not revealed J |
