Show It Would Clear Our Consciences Whatever we may think about the argument over expanding the present war with Chinese Communists in Korea most of us will agree with the contention that the free world should not supply Communist China with the means for killing United Nations troops in Korea This fundamentally is what the current current cur cur- rent United States proposal to the U. U N. N general assembly relative to an arms embargo against Communist China amounts to Ernest A. A Gross deputy U. U S. S representative tentative to the U. U N. N in presenting the proposal Thursday told the assembly that no soldier in Korea and of course he meant no U. U N. N soldier should be bethe bethe bethe the target of a bullet manufactured in inthe inthe inthe the free world We Ve do not see how anyone who supports supports sup sup- supports ports the United Nations stand against aggression in Korea can hold any other view T The e free world should not fight aggression with one hand while it gives material encouragement to the aggressor with the other Nor is it simply a matter of oC stopping the shipment of bullets or guns or tanks to the Communists China has the capacity for making many of the tools of war itself provided it has the strategic materials and the machinery Any embargo which is imposed on Communist China should include as Mr Gross explained explained explained ex ex- such things as petroleum materials for the production of atomic energy or machinery useful in military production as well as ammunition and implements of war And we think the list might well be extended to cover any other lother militarily vit vital 1 items which Communist Communist Communist Com Com- China would not otherwise be beable beable able abie to get Rubber is a case in point It must be disturbing not only to Americans but to many Britons to hear Prime Minister Attlee defend the export of rubber from British possessions to Communist China The British colonial office has admitted that tons of rubber has gone to red China from British Malaya since the Korean war began It is certainly vexing to think that this rubber provides tires for the jeeps and trucks which bring the Chinese Communists pouring down on British and American soldiers fighting in Korea According to dispatches from U U. N. N headquarters in New York the assembly is not too sympathetic toward the U U. S. S arms embargo proposal Delegates no doubt are concerned with the admitted diff difficulties of making such an embargo effective effective and and with the simple fact that Soviet Russia and India would undoubtedly undoubtedly undoubtedly un un- un- un continue to supply red China and quite possibly make up for any deficiencies There are indeed many problems involved in any arms embargo But itis itis it itis is one kind of retaliation against Communist Communist Com Com- Communist China which is readily available to us without the risk of further involvement involvement involve involve- involvement ment in the military morass of China It will let off a little steam if nothing else And it would clear our conscience of the guilty feeling of giving left-handed left help to an enemy who is trying to destroy y our fighting men |
