An Another ther Attempt to toY Y Get et Law aw on Parking 2 x A number of efforts have been made to get the state legislature to approve y a prima facie parking law Such a aj j law would presume that the owner owner of a motor vehicle was responsible in a case of In the past the hc effort has nas failed largely because lawmakers from outside of Salt Lake City believed 7 the law aw would only benefit this city f They therefore voted against it T r The result has been that in in Salt Sal t Lake City the vigorous enforcement of parking laws has been extremely difficult The persistent violator has claimed that he was not responsible for the violation and it has been up to the city to prove conclusively in court that he was guilty Such proof cannot easily be obtained Sometimes it has been necessary to put v va a police officer on the job of catching a persistent violator for several d days days days-be ys be- be 3 G fore a case can ean be prepared against him which will stand up in court This situ situation tion has encouraged parking parking parking park park- ing violations of all kinds It has reduced reduced reduced re re- parking meter revenue for the city It has added to the downtown parking problem and to downtown traffic traffic traffic fic congestion Now another effort to get such a law passed is to be made This time there is reason to believe it will have a better chance of approval than ever before A number of other cities in Utah have parking meters today They are experiencing experiencing experiencing ex ex- the same dame same kind of difficulty Salt Lake City has experienced in the matter of enforcing parking laws Itis It Itis Itis is believed these cities will now urge their representatives and senators inthe in inthe inthe the legislature to vote for a prima facie law The Utah Municipal league the Utah Safety council and the parking council appointed by the Salt Lake city commission commission commission commis commis- sion to study the city's parking parkin problems problems problems lems have all endorsed this law It isto is isto isto to be hoped that approval will finally be given during the 1949 legislative ses sea sion
