Building the America of Tomorrow F TN THE midst of the election n turmoil this week we have overlooked overlooked overlooked over- over looked the fact that this besides beside being election week is National Education n week Even though it does detract somewhat somewhat somewhat some some- what from the attention given to education it is not inappropriate ate that the election and education week should occur at the same lame time There is a good deal of connection between the two In a democracy elections would mean little if it were not noti for education And without elections elections i education would mean little more than government-dominated government ganda Education has a a. very great role to play In our democracy Probably more than any other single influence it determines the kind of a country we will have Depending upon the kind of a aJob ajob Job fob education does in training our youth in molding character In encouraging initiative and enterprise in developing intellect we will have a strong or a R. weak America tomorrow a progressive progressive progresSive sive or a stagnant America a free and democratic or a regImented regimented regimented regi regI- and despotic America For a nation is not earth and water mountains and rivers farms and factories Boundary lines can be and often are changed A nation is people They make it good or bad strong or weak And the job of education in America is building the American people of tomorrow which means th the American nation of tomorrow It is a great responsibility Fortunately for America the majority of its educators Recognize their responsibility Conscientiously and sincerely they are trying to build good citizens the citizens the kind of citizens who will be intelligent voters enterprising workers and able leaders They are endeavoring to make the American people of the future a ft better people so that they in their turn will make this a better America It is a great and important work work work-a a grave responsibility May they have the wisdom and the skill the patience and the understanding and the strong faith in democracy that they must have if their efforts are to be successful
