Show 1 The West Should Fight This Scheme i UTAH officials and business men are expressing their concern I over a proposal made by eastern shippers to permit transit l I privileges and reconsolidation of mixed carload shipments of l groceries candies and related products at Salt Lake City and Ogden t The danger danser in this proposal to Utah interests is that th t it itI I would give a freight rate advantage to eastern manufacturers j and distributors over o Utah manufacturers and distributors Eastern firms could ship goods to Salt Lake City and Ogden 1 store store and consolidate them and then ship them on to other i points north south or west of Salt Lake or Ogden at no additional additional addi addi- L I freight cost except a 6 0 per car switching charge But ButI Utah manufacturers or distributors of merchandise produced I elsewhere would have to pay regular local freight charges for any shipments they madeI made I Freight rates from the eastern part of the nation to Salt I Lake and Ogden are the same as they are to points beyond these II two 1 cities Thus an eastern firm could handle its own distribution distribution i tion for the intermountain area with only the one freight charge harge j But a Utah distributor getting the same merchandise shipped i from the same point in the east cast would have to pay not only I I the original freight charge but another relatively high local II freight charge for shipping the merchandise from Salt Lake or Ogden to other points north south or west i I This is just dust another sample of the kind of freight rate manipulation which has been used by eastern interests time and I again to give them an advantage over western business We Ve had the same basic problem in the old long short haul haul rate situa situa- tion We Ve have it in the rate structures which give eastern fabricators fabricators fabri fabri- i of western raw materials the advantage over potential western fabricators There isn't any question about it freight rates have been l I used to protect the position of established eastern industries to toI I the detriment of the development of western 4 Industries The west has been fighting for years against this discrimination Toda Today when the west at last sees some hope of developing f an industrial empire of its own is certainly not the time for any I j extension of this freight rate discrimination Not only Utah but every every other western state should fight this latest discriminatory discriminatory discriminatory tory proposal And not only local manufacturers and distributors of groceries and related products but all western manufacturers and distri distributors of all kinds of products should fight for it For if this new freight rate advantage for eastern business is accepted accepted accepted ac ac- ac- ac for groceries it will soon be extended to other products and if it is accepted for Utah it will soon be extended to other western states |
