J Roderick Korns Pop to Billy started out playing golf when Nibley Park golf course was opened in 1922 but says he was just a duffer It was his golf however that started Billy play- play ing ng Mr Korns' Korns chief claim to fame ame was in 1930 when he won wona a trophy for winning a leg on the directors directors' cup at Forest Dale Golf is not Mr Korns' Korns only achievement as he was the first state tate amateur heavyweight boxing champion in Utah winning the title itle in 1910 and played a bang- bang up game at c enter center on the old West high ligh school football team up to 1909 and on the University of Utah teams of that era He also played basketball on the old Y YM M MC MC C 3 A team and in the Commercial league eague which was in operation around 1910 Shot Rabbits From Car Another of his claims to fame is that hat he was the first hunter in Utah to shoot jackrabbits from a moving auto I He has been an active member of the Shrine for many years and with his father helped start the movement that resulted in the formation of Progress lodge J F and andAM I AM d j Billy who in 1941 enjoyed one of the greatest golf years any Beehive state divot digger has ever had began swinging a golf club when he was only 2 years old He entered his first tournament the junior open at the age of 9 and has never missed one since Billy won his first title in 1936 when he captured the class B division division division divi divi- sion in an open match play meet with a victory over Al Emery a much older opponent Fourth Low at Logan In 1937 he was fourth low in the Logan invitational meet and med med- alist in the junior tourney In the same tourney in 1938 he set a competitive competitive competitive com com- course record of 32 31 which has never been equaled He was the youngest player in inthe inthe inthe the title bracket of the state amateur amateur amateur ama ama- tourney and reached the In that year he also entered the state open for the first time and finished eleventh among the amateurs Billy began Ito to to climb to golf pinnacles in 1938 winning the junior open title the first flight of the state amateur and reaching the finals of the Ogden invitational tournament He was seventh amateur in the state open in 1939 and with Art Everson of Butte captured the pro pro-am pro amateur title in Boise The young tied for second second second sec sec- ond among the amateurs in the 1940 state open was semifinalist in the junior open and beat Ed Perry for the city amateur crown He became a member of the 1940 public links team and nd went to Detroit Detroit Detroit De De- De- De troit where he and t the e other members members members mem mem- bers of the Salt Lake City aggregation aggregation aggregation gation acquitted themselves very creditably Billy started 1941 with a bang finishing second among the simon in the state open and winning win vin vinning ning the qualifying round and medal honors in the public links tryouts En route to Spokane Wash for forthe forthe forthe the tourney he stopped off at Walla Walla long enough to finish fourth among the amateurs in the Washington state open and take up runner-up honors in the Washington state amateur After the Walla Walla tournaments he went to Spokane where he shot some of the hottest golf in the public lin links s meet a and d s stood a good oo chance right up to the end end of ot coming out on or near the top Upon returning to his home city he went out and set a course record record record rec rec- ord of 64 at Bonneville in the course of retaining his city amateur amateur amateur ama ama- title In that match he proved himself of championship caliber by going to the thirty-seventh thirty hole to beat veteran Walter Cosgriff for forthe forthe forthe the crown He also won the state amateur title at the Salt Lake Country club with a decision victory victory victory vic vic- tory over Lew Wasson Led Amateurs He ended the summers summer's campaign campaign campaign cam cam- by finishing first among the amateurs in the Rocky mountain open in Grand Junction Colo Billy is a quiet unassuming youngster going about his golf in ina ina a like business-like way and taking his victories and losses with equal equanimity As for Pop he took his own losses and victories all right but frankly admits he suffers when Billy is playing Ive always told the boy to give it all hes he's got and if that isn't enough to take his beating like a man Korns says but ii it isn't easy for me to do the same Ive always enjoyed athletics and outdoor sports but I get 10 times as much enjoyment over seeing seeing seeing see see- ing Billy win than I ever did when I managed to come out on top he says |
