IS another Armistice day From the lightS lighting lighting lighting light light- ing of the flaming V for victory sign atop S S Ensign peak Monday night until the close of of of the day tonight there will be full recognition recognition tion Stion tion of this day which marks the anniversary of the close of the World war 5 t The period of si silence at 11 13 a. a m. m the parade parade parade pa- pa pa pa- rade the open house at Fort Douglas and the American Legions Legion's observance will be U ll much the same as in other years Significantly however the emphasis this Armistice rm day is not the same as it has been in past years S Significantly the emphasis is on war rather than peace peace National Defense week opens on Armistice lay day ay and almost as much attention is being given to that fact as is being given to Armistice Armistice Armi Armi- stice Uce day itself Utah is joining wholeheartedly wholeheartedly edly in jn n the observance of National Defense week The importance of preparedness for fora a possible new war is b ing stressed and the the program fox fop training Utah's civilian defense volunteers is being launched Peace has been the big theme of past Armistice days Even in our memories of the thelast thelast last war and in our tributes to the war dead the blessing of peace has been uppermost in inS our S our minds This year peace takes a secondary role for we have learned med to our sorrow that Armistice day and the peace that it stood for was a failure The end of the last war didn't create that condition of lasting peace which we had hoped for The armistice of 1918 rather inaugurated a period of political economic and social conflict unrest and chaos which S culminated finally in th the present war Somehow we failed after the 1918 armistice armi armi- stice and stice-and and all aU our past celebrations of that S event and our emphasis on the peace it brought have been proved but empty gestures The peace that we saw was a mirage a adream adream adream dream which has been rudely shattered in these last few years yearS' Today most of the world is at war We ourselves are on the verge verge vergeot of ot war The victory victory vic vie tory and the peace symbolized by Armistice day have been wiped out out and and as a result Armistice day save for its tribute to those S who fought and those who who- died in iii the last war war has pas lost its significance Today Armistice day is a time lime for mem- mem f ry f failure not s success It is a time for t thinking of war and preparedness for war S not peace Yet this Armistice day has has has' hasby by no means lost all its value for us It will be worth much for America to remember today the failure of the 1918 armistice It will be worth much for us to make up our minds now that we shall shaU not fail again that again that another armiS armistice armistice armi armi- S stice shall bring real peace to the world If we profit from the mistakes of of the last S armistice our failure may not have been in in inS S vain |
