S STARTS TESTS FOR RAID SPOTTERS NEW EW YORK Oct 9 Roar UP-Roar- UP Roar Roaring ing bombers and lightning-fast lightning fighter planes took off from Massachusetts Massachusetts Massachusetts Mas Mas- to North Carolina Thursday as the army sought to determine the efficiency of its air force and o off some civilian air raid spotters The maneuvers beginning at dawn were the most widespread ever undertaken in the United States in the interest of air effi- effi and defense and they will continue until October 16 Day and night for the next week air raid alarms may sound in any of the innumerable communities of the state 10 area warning the citizenry that they are in danger of a simulated attack and the work of organized spotters will be checked carefully through their telephone reports to headquarters in New NewYork York Boston Philadelphia and some 1600 other observation posts
