A SCOURGED CITY I IThe The small but recently rich city of Paterson I New Jersey has been in the public mind very constantly constantly con con- for the past year real or two and not in a way particularly flattering to the place in n at least two instances It first inscribed itself upon the roll ot of notoriety if not of fame by becoming known as the nest of one of Americas America's most desperate and dangerous dangerous dangerous dan dan- groups of anarchists It was in Paterson that the murder of Humbert King of Italy was planned and from it went forth that unfortunate monarchs monarch's assassin to fulfill his diabolical mission Next ext the town was hideously advertised over the round world in connection with the unspeakable ble Jennie Bosschieter outrage and murder It fairly climbed down the cellar of infamy when a jury of its representative citizens saved that poor working girls girl's torturers and murderers from the halters they had earned presumably on account of the former social position and family wealth and influence of two of them Then old Ja Jacob ob Rogers proprietor of the Rogers Locomotive Works shut shutdown shutdown down clown his plant and threw fifteen hundred men many of or whom had served him bim and his father before I him for a lif lifetime time out of employment merely employment merely because because be be- 1 cause he was tired of the business Now Paterson has been visited by the demon fire and ten million dollars' dollars worth of its improvements destroyed Because of the sickening Bosschieter case and the comparative e indifference of the townspeople to the tIle fri frightful crime involved in it there is a possibility possibility possibility that public sympathy ma may not be as stron strong for Paterson in view of its recent calamity as otherwise otherwise otherwise other other- wise it might be We e can even fancy people murmuring murmuring murmuring mur mur- something about the mills of the gods as as s they read of the devastating conflagration
