Show V V VV V V V V V V V VV V V V V V V V V V V V iV r vW 7 4 7 f V VV VV V V VS V V V 4 V V VV V V V V V V V V V r V V V V VV V V V V V V V V V V V VV VV VV VV V V V VV V V V V V VV VV V V I 5 V VV V V VV VV VV V V V V V V V 7 V V V V V 4 V V V VV V V VV VV 0 V 4 V V V Vt V V t V V 5 V V eV V V V V V S V V V V Plant Bulbs Now to A Avoid vOl d Regrets t s W When len Spring Comes By MAUD CHEGWIDDEN Telegram Garden Editor The spring flowering bulbs can only be planted in fall Next sp spring ing when you see these lovely things blooming in gardens all around you it will be too late to wish you also had planted some and you will have to wait another whole year to have them in your garden Of all of the many fine bulbs daffodils I always think are most welcome They are the first of the showy ones to bloom and their gay golden tints are arc so very welcome welcome welcome wel wel- come after winters winter's long reign Even though the garden may boast of hundreds of crocuses and which flower even earlier than the daffodils it is these latter which make the garden brilliant Daffodil bulbs need as early planting as possible if it the flowers are arc to be the finest ever You may delay purchasing and planting tulips and hyacinths and other bulbs for another month yet if you like but the daffodils should by a all l means be purchased as soon as you can V Flowers Misnamed There is much confusion in the minds of amateur gardeners between between between be be- tween the names daffodil and narcissus nar nar- Jonquil also comes into the picture and causes more mix- mix ups Some florists who do not I grow flowers but merely act as I middle men in iii selling often cause more confusion by misnaming these flowers They call daffodils jonquils when they arent aren't and so on The two names daffodil and narcissus nar star are interchangeable in this country and refer to the same flowers flowers flow flow- ers daffodil merely being the everyday everyday every every- day English term and narcissus the classical one Jonquils however are are different from daffodils The daffodil has rather wide leaves while the jonquil has very narrow grass like foliage and the jonquil has its little yellow flowers in clusters al al- al ways Daffodils usually have one flower to a stem although there is the class known as which are bunch flowering Most o of the daffodils also are white with yellow cup while jonquils are al always always al- al ways yellow ellow and very sweetly scented V Easy to o Grow Daffodils are among the very easiest of ot all flowers to grow They thrive in any soil and situation and once planted are almost permanent In this respect they are far less trouble than tulips which must be lifted and replanted every three years at the most Several years ago I planted two dozen daffodils in groups of three each bulb a foot apart from its neighbor in triangular form Today Today To To- day from that original planting I have hundreds of ot bulbs I 1 took them up last summer imer when en their foliage was almost gone just enough remaining to show me where the bulbs were and actually I had so many many that I 1 got tired of counting Since I 1 didn't want the daffodils in the same place again I 1 moved them all to my strip of woodland planting them hither and yon just justas as I 1 pleased so that next spring I expect the effect to be entirely natural I 1 think that golden daffodils daffodils daffodils daffo daffo- dils look best of all when they are grown beneath trees trees' or under shrubs although of course they are lovely anywhere QUERIES T.
