J Moran taken by death Friday after a lingering lingering- illness Coming here early in l life fe as a graduate cum curn V Sf laude from the the- school of hard knocks he soon I was a a colorful political figure in territorial days t He He was a member of the city council from r the J-the the Fourth municipal ward and when the commission commission com- com mission form of government succeeded council council- manic rule he was elected erected a city commissioner commission- commission er and designated as commissioner of streets and public improvements In or out of public 4 office he was active and i influential in political circles and always interested and active in civic I affairs Mr Moran was a good citizen He was 1 strong in his convictions and never lacked for br courage to defend them Pat as everyone knew him was appreciated by this community If it had known as much of his life story as was was was' revealed upon his death this appreciation would have been redoubled many times A Yorkshire shire lad born January 23 1864 he was left fa fatherless herless when seven years 4 h old Three years later he started to work He worked hard all through the years until ill h health alth forced his retirement 15 years ago ago At 1 3 the age of 14 years he came to America and ip worked in Baltimore Cincinnati Chicago and andI I I. I Omaha 1 I He had become a journeyman f it Soon after r he arrived in this city he set up in business He won a contract for the first waterworks waterworks waterworks water- water works construction of magnitude undertaken ken here in 1900 Becoming a paving contractor he 4 laid the greater part of the city's asphalt streets He later later was the concrete contractor for the A. A S. S R. R plant at Garfield He constructed the theS S Weber canyon wooden stave pipeline for the Utah Light and Railway company and later the Cottonwood conduit for the city water supply supply sup sup- ply both gigantic giganti undertakings He installed the heating plants at the University of Utah when it was moved from the site of the present West high school to the east bench He did simil similar similar sim- sim il ilar r work at the Utah State Agricultural college and in a large number of the public schools here there He built the East high school and the administration building for the university These are a few out of many enterprises he carried forward in an active l life e. e He was a af f self-made self man in the fullest meaning of the term v 1 going it alone on his own power almost from J infancy infancy but but he never lacked for power am- am ambition v coura courage e or resourcefulness ss and these with his native good humor geniality alert intelligence and industry won him success friends and fortune He was charita charitable le friendly friendly friend- friend ly and loyal A man who leaves many ments ments in useful and durable construction behind p he also l leaves aves a host of friends to mourn his l p passing assing mg |
