Open Discussion Of Money l Plans Good for Nation By Dy BRUCE DRUCE CATTON CATION The heated discussion that has arisen over the administrations administration's gold po policy icy icya Ls is a most encouraging sign to all lovers lov by- ers ens of ot freedom of speech and of the press Whatever ones one's opinions in inthe inthe inthe the matter maUer it cannot be denied that Ithe the opposition Is 13 getting its full share of the debate But even more satisfying than this is 15 the feeling that such open discussion discussion discussion discus discus- sion of ot the country's most conflicting problem is certain to bring about a saner and more effective solution than would consideration of ot the difficulty difficulty culty from rom one side alone Both the sound money advocates and the so called have strong reasons to stand their ground Each has rallied to its side the arguments ar an- of ot prof professors Sors of economics I ar-I and other experts to prove it is right And each has no ulterior motive back of ot its assertions other than the belief that its way out of ot the present depression is the best Difference e between the sound money men and the lies in m the difference between a strict adherence ad to the economic phase of ot the gold problem and a n consideration of its political significance as well For there is no doubt that politics in the broader humanitarian sense has much to do with this matter While Wall street looks upon the subject from a cold matter of ot fact dollars and cents viewpoint President President President dent Roosevelt is forced to consider it not only in that light but from the angle of the butcher the baker and the candlestick maker This is 13 the politics of the whole matter And this complicates the problem much more for the president than it does for the eastern financiers and economists Perhaps if the sound money men had not risen up in their might and raised the howl they have bave the adminIstration administration admin admin- might have overlooked the themore themore themore more conservative phase of ot this dis dis- dis cussio i Perhaps if it sincere antagonists of the presidents president's policy had approved blindly of his every move we might have found ourselves sailing fast toward toward to ward actual inflation and its accompanying accompanying dangers So it is much better belter then that a voice has been raised against the governments government's gov gay gold policy if it only to keep those in control from running amuck
