S supreme co courts court's recent decision granting new trials to the seven negroes from Scottsboro Ala who vho had been sentenced to de death th for attacking two white girls For s some rne reason that was never quite clear the Communists had made the cause of or the sev seven n men their men their own and when the day came for the supreme court to hand down its decision on the case they tried to picket the court in the best ultra- ultra radical style The police promptly and properly sent them bout about their business if any and while the reds were being ingloriously scattered the supreme court handed down a decision giving all the condemned con con- men new trials If the decision had been adverse we would have uve heard a lot about capitalistic oppression and what-not what but as it is the demonstrators are left left- l looking oking more than a little silly In the case of the hunger marchers who marched in automobiles it is quite sufficient to Sa say that they went to the capi capital al without a cause Having none there was nothing to win winand and alid nd nothing to lose The marchers are far worse off oU from every standpoint than they were when they started their pilgrimage The sole satisfying fact in connection with this demonstration was that it was well handled by the Washington po police po- po lice Uce There is no particular credit due the marchers march march- ers era ers because they knew beforehand that violence would only have meant cracked skulls for them AU All our so called demonstrations have served to show that the orderly course laid down by law Jaw lawand lawand and tradition n in America is the only successful means means' of assuring justice to all classes The impo imported im j. po ported i d idea of exhibiting mus muscular ular power to ob obtain ob- ob tain legislation desired by any faction so far has o only debased whatever of merit there may have in the various causes that have be been pa pa- J cl lS fashion |
